Stepping Out of the Slate is a collection of new smartphone dependent devices from the Yamaha Design Lab. The idea behind this is to bring nostalgia back to the way we listen to music, which is certainly a novel idea.

What’s included in the Stepping Out of the Slate Collection?

There are four different prototype concepts, each with a slightly different approach to creating a more interactive listening experience. The way we experience music these days is based solely on convenience.

Our music players are voice activated and our playlists are ready. It seems like so much individuality has been taken from the experience and these designs are a step away from the usual philosophy without venturing into the archaic audiophile realm.

TurnT

TurnT brings out the tactile nature of Vinyl Playback on your smartphone. It is activated by placing the stylus over the mobile device and repositioning the tone arm select title like on a turntable.

According to Yamaha, the experience of using TurnT is “will bring back the nostalgia as well as the solemn respect for the music‘ which is an amazing feeling.

winder

This device takes you back to your childhood like a music box Function that plays songs as soon as the key is raised. The key keeps turning throughout the playback duration and the mechanism affects the audio, which “can lead to a more intimate music experience.

We’ll take your word for it. To me it has the overall character of something out of the Robin Williams movie toys. So let’s hope it’s at least half the fun to use.

musiclight

This design uses a tea light candle Enable playback and goes out as soon as the flame goes out. As the candlelight flickers, the Audio responds to this and minimally changes the listening experience.

According to Yamaha, the idea behind MusicLight is to create an atmosphere “like hearing a song around the campfire.” Let’s hope no one burns down their house while listening to Talking Heads.

RhythmBot

These four gizmos are intuitive metronomes that react to the pace of audio being played. Cajon, Casta, Cym and Bell accompany you in real time or can link to the tempo your smartphone playback.

The RhythmBot looks like a fun addition to your music room, perfect for practicing Piano, guitar, Drums, or any acoustic instrument for that matter. I wonder how long they will perform at faster tempos?
