Taika Waititi has had a hit streak most filmmakers never experience. He follows the acclaimed and hilarious Thor: Ragnarokwho single-handedly transformed the Thunder God from Marvel’s least charismatic avenger into the funniest Thor: Love and Thunder. He already has a Star Wars movie in mind, although he can’t remember exactly which of his stars has been to a galaxy far, far away. And best of all, Taika Waititi’s most acclaimed TV series, Reservation dogs is coming back for season 2 and a trailer has just been released. Listen:
Reservation dogs Season 2 seems to pick up right where Season 1 ended, as the titular gang of Oklahoma Indigenous teenagers has fallen apart. Elora Danan (Devery Jacobs) is en route to California with her former NDN mob rival, Jackie (Elva Guerra), and hopefully doesn’t raise as many questions as to whether her name came from the 1988 Ron Howard fantasy film pasture. Jackie approaches a Zoltar-like machine in which a cartoon Native American promises words of wisdom, and then narrates the rest of the trailer.
The self-proclaimed leader of the Reservation Dogs Bear Smallhill (D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai) appears to have embarked on a career in construction for Season 2, and as usual complains about not having enough guidance for the job. Someone asks him if he thinks he’s the only person on the reservation to have an absentee parent, suggesting that Reservation dogs Season 2 could have another appearance from his dad Punkin Lusty (Sten Joddi) and hopefully a sequel to his hit Greasy Frybread.
We also see more of Willie Jack (Paulina Alexis) as she is questioned about her love life (or lack thereof) and her typically deadpan responses. Stoner recluse/powerful mystic Uncle Brownie (Gary Farmer) appears in several scenes, flanked by local artist Bucky (Wes Studi), so it looks like we’re getting more of the Elders’ slightly off-kilter adventures get of the reserve. But best of all, we’re getting one Reservation dogs Season 2 Appearance of Bear’s awkwardly self-assured spirit guide, William Knifeman (Dallas Goldtooth), a Lakota warrior who died during the Battle of Little Big Horn after his horse (who also followed him into the afterlife) stumbled over a gopher hole. It’s quite a fun show.
The first season of Reservation dogs, created by Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi, received universal acclaim and won the prestigious Peabody Award for its unique fusion of humor, casually supernatural events, and emotionally honest confrontations with the stress and poverty of life on the reservation. It is also unique in that it is the first television show to have an entirely Indigenous writing team and directing team, and a cast composed primarily of Indigenous actors. It’s also notable for sharing a significant percentage of its cast with another acclaimed comedy, Peacock’s Rutherford Falls. Reservation dogs Season 2 is scheduled to premiere on Hulu on August 3.
