Actor and producer Upasana Singh, well known in the Hindi and Punjabi film industry, filed a lawsuit against him on Thursday Miss Universe Harnaaz Sandhu. Upasana has accused Harnaaz of breaching her work commitment to the former’s Punjabi production Bai Ji Kuttange. According to the agreement between them, Harnaaz was supposed to give 25 days for the promotion of the film, but didn’t fulfill it. Upasana says winning the pageant changed the young artist.
The civil action was brought under Section 10 of the Specific Relief Act, 2018 read with Section 73 of the Indian Contract Act, 1872 to seek damages from the defendant for failure to perform its obligations under the agreement between them. The complaining company, through solicitor Karan Sachdeva, has sought damages of Rs 1 crore from Harnaaz.
Speaking of damage, Upasana Singh said indianexpress.com: “The release date of my film was May 27th and for us it was the greatest day of our lives when Harnaaz Kaur Sandhu became Miss Universe. We celebrated and they celebrated. Everyone knew how close I was to her. After I told her that the promotional dates for my film are around May 27th, she stopped taking my calls. Then I started texting her and I was like, ‘The movie comes out on May 27th. I started emailing her but she didn’t respond to anything.”
The worried producer continued, “I sent her the film’s poster announcing the release date and every actor in the film shared that poster on their social media addresses, but she didn’t. At the time I thought that was very strange.”
Upasana Singh also claimed that she decided to move Bai Ji Kuttange’s release date from May 27 to August 19 in hopes that Harnaaz Sandhu would make himself available for promotions.
“I asked her so badly but then I thought that since she recently won the competition she might have some commitments so I should change the date. I changed the release date of the film to August 19th. Then I started contacting them but I didn’t get any response. She started avoiding everyone in my circle of friends. Someone called her and said there was a show in Dubai, which she agreed and discussed details. But when the same person told Harnaaz to talk about the dates of my film, they ended the conversation. That’s how she insulted me,” said the 47-year-old actor.
Upasana Singh further explained the financial loss caused by Harnaaz Sandhu.
“I sent her a message that if she doesn’t give me dates I will file a case because in this case I lost my distributor because the previous distributors knew that Harnaaz Kaur Sandhu is in this film. Other people should invest in my film, not me. Today I have a loan of Rs 1 crore 60 lakh to release this film just because of Harnaaz Kaur Sandhu as people resigned because she did it. My film has been delayed and I have his interest. So many billboards, so much publicity had happened before, everything was wasted,” revealed Upasana, whose son Nanak will make his acting debut in the upcoming film.
She added: “Even at that age, I let her fool me. I never imagined that she could do this to me.”
Harnaaz Sandhu won the Miss Universe crown on December 13, 2021. Upasana Singh feels that the success has changed Harnaaz and that she no longer respects the Punjabi film industry.
“She sees Punjabi film as a small thing and she feels like she’s going to do Bollywood and Hollywood. If you are going to be Miss Universe, say “Chakk de fatte”. They say I’m a Punjabi and I’m proud. However, they consider the Punjabi language small. I made such a big film. My life’s savings are invested in it. My son’s career depends on it and now Punjabi people are small for you. Now Hollywood and Bollywood are big,” Upasana said.
The senior actor added: “So many big celebrities don’t leave their native language, but she thinks we’re so small she hasn’t even shared a poster. How long it will take? It takes 30 seconds. She puts up pictures of her parties and Holi and everything else. Emotionally forgotten, but as a pro, shouldn’t she take a stand on me? I have an agreement from her for 25 days but she can’t give me 5 days?”
Not only does Upasana Singh feel personally betrayed as a producer. The actress recalls the time she first met Harnaaz Sandhu, who was a struggling actor at the time.
“At that time she was a fighter and she had come to me with her mother. She asked me to give her a chance. I liked them and thought we should give newcomers a chance. I come from a small town and reached this stage with great difficulty. I understand travel very well and how new girls struggle to find work. I get it and that’s why I always thought that when I make films I give some money to new people who deserve it so they don’t have to struggle like I do. With that in mind, I gave her the chance. After that I gave her a chance in another film too,” Upasana recalls.
Upasana Singh says the court will send a summons to Harnaaz Sandhu.
“I’m doing this so the world will know that what happened to me shouldn’t happen to them,” she concluded.
