At a time when villains like the MCU’s Thanos and DC’s Steppenwolf were created using computer-generated imagery, Vecna was created with 90 percent practical effects. To pay homage to 1980s horror villains, series creators Matt and Ross Duffer hired renowned effects artist Barrie Gower (game of Thrones) in 2020. Bower spent about six hours every morning in the makeup chair while the prosthetics were fitted. Of course, the intention to make Vecna’s design practical probably played a big part in conceptualizing its look and what artists envisioned on paper or computer screens. While it certainly would have been easier to use CGI to more accurately adapt that initial concept art, the unsettling final look of the character was worth it, with even star Millie Bobby Brown admitting to being terrified of Vecna.
Although the images shared by Maher prove that Vecna could have been even more disgusting than his final appearance, the face and eyes are completely different from what they appear on screen. Ultimately, as pointed out by Maher, Bower’s final look allowed him to emote better while wearing the prosthetic makeup, making him all the more terrifying. In the end, his almost entirely practical character design changed the game stranger things Season 4, expands the mythology and ups the ante in a true dungeons Homage. After his fiery encounter with Eleven in the fourth season finale, Vecna will likely look even more grotesque when audiences see him in the final fifth season.
