In Season 4 of Stranger Things, Will reassures Mike that he is the heart of the group, but Will’s biased perspective may cloud his judgement.
Warning! SPOILERS ahead for stranger things 4, Volume 2.
That stranger things The Season 4 finale proved Will was wrong about Mike the whole time. stranger things Season 4 ended with an explosive feature-length conclusion pitting Hawkins’ heroes against each other with Vecna in Upside Down. To save Max’s life, Eleven entered her mind to try and fight Vecna until she lost the upper hand and was caught by the vines. Mike, finally able to admit that he loved Eleven, encouraged her to fight with an impassioned speech and gave El the strength to break free. While Mike’s speech offered a touching moment, it would not have happened without the assurance and guidance of his best friend, Will.
in the stranger things Season 4 Episode 8, Mike, Will, Jonathan and Argyle head to Nevada to rescue Eleven. On the drive, Mike and Will had an emotional scene in the back of the van. Here, Will tried to convince Mike that he was the center of the party and showed him the painting he had been working on before spring break. Will’s painting depicted Mike as a valiant knight leading his friends in battle against a fearsome three-headed dragon. Will insisted that Mike had always been the one who inspired the group.
While Will’s desire for his friend to feel better and have confidence in his relationship with Eleven was admirable, it resulted in Will’s feelings being pushed aside. Jonathan noticed this, hence his fraternal chat with Will in the same episode. But it left audiences wondering why exactly Will believed Mike was the heart of the group. Is that even true, or was that belief a result of Will’s conflicting feelings for Mike and a sense of “otherness” that has plagued him for four seasons? stranger things?
Why Will thinks Mike is the heart
Although it hasn’t been verbally confirmed on the show yet, Will Byers’ sexuality is in stranger things has always been a topic of discussion, and this season of stranger things focused on the fact that Will feels different compared to everyone else. He related this to how Eleven often feels, the fact that she’s so different from other people too. When he told Mike he made Eleven feel like she wasn’t a mistake, it was clear he was also referring to himself and how his friendship with Mike was such an important part of his life. Mike was a lifeline for Will, just as Mike serves as a lifeline for Eleven. Understandably, Will considers Mike the heart of the entire group, but maybe not everyone would see it that way.
Will’s conflicting feelings for his best friend, especially when they are romantic in nature, played an important role in guiding Will’s perspective stranger things Season 4. If Mike has Will’s heart and he has Eleven’s, how could he not be considered the heart of the entire group? While Will believes Mike is the one playing that role, his unique focus on Eleven could rob him of that title. The dynamic between Mike, Will, and Eleven isn’t the only dynamic to consider in the party, and different perspectives might provide different answers to that all-important question: who is the glue that holds the Hawkins gang together?
Why Will himself could be the heart
Will focused on feeling different from everyone else. Whether it was because of his confusion about his sexuality or because of his ongoing connection to the Upside Down, it still prevents him from seeing how important he is to the group as a whole. Will probably feels guilty for getting kidnapped in the first place and dragging everyone into such a dangerous mess. It’s this guilt that keeps him from seeing how important he is to the group as a whole. It was her love for him – his mother’s love, his brother’s love, his friends’ love – that brought them all together. It was Mike, Dustin and Lucas’ determination to find Will themselves that brought them to Eleven. It all comes back to Will. Will himself could be the heart of the group; he’ll just never let himself believe it.
Who else could be the heart of the group?
stranger things has a wide cast of characters, and there’s no reason to think that Mike and Will are the only viable candidates to be considered the heart of the group. As already mentioned, perspective matters. Mike is the heart of the group in the eyes of Will and Eleven. In Jonathan’s eyes, however, it’s probably Will or his mother Joyce, whose determination to understand and follow up on clues about Upside Down is nothing short of admirable. In Dustin’s eyes, it might even be Steve, an outsider who’s decided it’s the right thing to do to protect these people in any way he can, whether it’s beating Demodogs with a nail bat or sacrificing himself to the Russians. Luke, a stranger things Season 4, might think it’s Max, with her desire to save her from Vecna’s wrath overshadowing everything else. Steve might think it’s Nancy as she’s always ready to protect those she cares about. It could be Dustin, whose greatest wish is to keep his friends together forever. The heart of the group might even be Eleven herself, as the group’s desire to protect them from both Upside Down and the scientists who made them has guided them through each season.
With a cast as big as the in stranger things, it is difficult to identify the heart of the group. Each character brings something unique to the table, be it superhero skills, bravery, love, empathy, or humor. The heart of the group has a different meaning for everyone and perhaps the events to come as well stranger things Season 5 will present a whole new perspective and show who the heart of the party really is.
