Star Trek: SNW: Melissa Navia to Anti-Ortegas Fanatics: ‘See You All’

|

We’ve noticed a silver lining of late emerging from the growing social media s**tstorm, with its mix of narrow-minded gatekeepers and narrow-minded “pseudo-fans” pushing back on anything new or different. They are not exactly what you would call “change agents”. And one thing they love to do is yell “Wake up!” A production always “dares” at the top of its lungs to present a cast that represents the true diversity of our society instead of another “euphemism”. So you can imagine the sadness about that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds star Melissa Navia gets for her portrayal of the helmsman Erica Ortegas, with comments like “demo casting” and “just tick a box” thrown around by people who think they may know and love a show about the future while remaining happy and ignorant live in the past. Aside from Navia representing this growing trend of more and more within the creative community taking action against hate on social media and targeting people so they can be held accountable for the bile they spew.

“Have a beautiful Sunday! Last night was crazy. I just couldn’t let people spread hate like that while claiming it was harmless and doing nothing. Remember, I’m a fearless widow, so don’t worry about my back. There is good in this world and it’s worth fighting for,” Navia wrote in a two-tweet follow-up to their final night of slaying trolls and dropping knowledge. “And yes, I know the few we’ve tried to reason with are just the tip of an unfortunate iceberg, but they’re never hopeless to challenge.” Think of kids reading along and looking like me, looking up at me and hearing the same thing.” School. I can make noise now. So if I have the energy, I will do it.

And here’s a look at Navia’s tweet from several previous Twitter exchanges, making it clear that social media attacks won’t go unanswered: “Let it be known: I stop at nothing. I am not offering to anyone. When you come for Ortega with bigoted nonsense you come for everyone who looks like her, identifies with her, sees a part of herself in her, looks up to her, [and] mood with her. See you soon. See you all.” Here’s a look at those Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Star Tweet:

And here’s a look at the thread in question for you to check out here. But just to give you a sense of how little time they have for bigoted, hateful nonsense, here’s an example of a response from Navia during the exchange: “I don’t insist, m*** [editorial redaction]. I openly call you what your own words have made of you – a fanatic. You judge people superficially and think that you are morally superior to people who love whom they love. I don’t need an apology I beg you to do better. Speak less, think more.”
