She-Hulk isn’t Daredevil & Hulk’s first live-action team

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law could bring Daredevil and the Hulk together on screen, but the Disney+ show won’t be their first television collaboration.

She-Hulk: Lawyer promises the return of Daredevil in the MCU as well as the latest appearance of the Hulk, but it won’t be the first time the two characters have teamed up in a live-action TV show. Charlie Cox’s iteration of Daredevil makes the leap from his dark Netflix series of the same name to the more streamlined Disney+ universe, with his next stop in the MCU She-Hulk: Lawyer. The show also stars Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk, and while Marvel Comics fans should be excited for the chance to see the two superheroes on screen, Daredevil and the Hulk have appeared side-by-side on television before.

It’s fitting that Daredevil appear on a show that revolves around the law since his secret identity, Matt Murdock, is a lawyer who brings criminals to justice in the courtroom. But he’ll be doing more than just his job in the Disney+ series as the newest She-Hulk: Lawyer The trailer shows the hero dashing through the air, donning his iconic, more comic-accurate Daredevil suit, and armed with his batons. With Daredevil fully integrated into the MCU, it will be great to see him interact with additional characters including Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk (Tatiana Maslany) and possibly Bruce Banner, again in his Smart Hulk form. Yet while such a meeting may seem new, Marvel has previously featured Daredevil and the Hulk fighting together in live-action media.

In 1989, NBC aired a made-for-television comic film entitled ” The Trial of the Incredible Hulk. It was a sequel to The Incredible Hulk returns as well as another sequel to the hit Marvel Comics-based TV show The incredible Hulk starring Bill Bixby as “David” Banner and Lou Ferrigno as the first live-action Hulk. The Trial of the Incredible Hulk begins with Bruce on the run, living under a pseudonym, but after being wrongfully arrested for assault, he crosses paths with Matt Murdock (Rex Smith). As the Hulk, he teams up with Daredevil several times, and they eventually part ways as friends. Developed as a backdoor pilot for a Daredevil show, the made-for-TV movie actually featured more of him than the Hulk, but the spin-off never took place. The Trial of the Incredible Hulk is an entertaining bit of nostalgia, but otherwise doesn’t live up to today’s MCU standards.

She-Hulk can properly deliver a Hulk & Daredevil team-up

While a Daredevil and Hulk team already exists in live-action, The Trial of the Incredible Hulk does not provide a particularly good representation. Compared to modern day superhero movies, it’s a lukewarm and drawn-out film with lots of heart but little visual excitement. Plus, unlike in She HulkWhere Daredevil wears his iconic suit, in the TV movie he wears a black outfit similar to that of Matt Murdock’s costume in the first season of his Netflix show. Also, oddly for a film with his name in the title, the Hulk appears less and less frequently as the show progresses. In fact, the climax of the TV movie, in which Daredevil and Bruce Banner battle Wilson Fisk aka Kingpin (John Rhys-Davies), completely lacks the actual Hulk.

The Hulk is unlikely to make much of an appearance She-Hulk: Lawyer beyond what looks like a training montage at the beginning of the series. However, She-Hulk will take center stage amidst other MCU characters, and it seems like Daredevil is well equipped and ready to team up with the show’s titular character. How much screen time Daredevil will get is not yet clear She-Hulk: Lawyer, but any action scene between him and the Hulk will surely deliver the team-up audience it deserves. At least their MCU meeting has to be better than the relatively Hulk-less crossover that Marvel fans got when the two characters last appeared in live action together The Trial of the Incredible Hulk.
