Prince William and Duchess Kate prepare to participate Commonwealth Games next week in what promises to be the biggest sports festival in Britain since the London Olympics a decade ago.
And while they’ll soak up the action first-hand, the royals are known for their athletic prowess and enjoy a bit of healthy competition themselves.

The royal couple often flaunt their competitive streaks at public engagements, from their dragon boat race in 2011 to their competition at a London Marathon practice session in 2017.

But there’s one area where Prince William can never get the upper hand – tennis. It’s no secret that Kate is a talented tennis player who perfected her skills on the court of the prestigious Hurlingham Club in London. Former number one Rod Laver can also vouch for the Duchess’ competitiveness, especially when it comes to playing her husband.

Speaking of Daily Mail‘s Sebastian Shakespeare, the Australian, shared: “I’d met William and Kate a couple of times and in the Royal Box you get a chance to chat with them a bit. They play tennis against each other. William told me he couldn’t hit her.”
Kate and William both have a competitive streak
Prince William might also find that he has met his little counterpart Prince George. The seven year old has private lessons out Roger Federer at the Middleton family home in Bucklebury.
Prince George appeared to be enjoying his time at Wimbledon this year
Roger is a longtime friend of the Middleton family and he and his wife Mirka are even attended Pippa’s wedding to James Matthews in 2017.
During her visit to Wimbledon in 2019, Kate revealed George was a huge tennis fan and had practiced his swing with the sports star. When asked about George’s progress, Roger told reporters the little prince is showing promise, adding: “At this stage, it’s all about touching the ball. It’s OK. The same goes for my boys.”
It was the first time this year for the prince
Upon learning that he was George’s favorite tennis player, Roger said with a smile, “I think I have a slight advantage that I actually spent some time with him. So maybe I’m the only player he’s ever met.” Then you have a little head start on who your favorite player is.” He added, “Look, he’s a sweet boy. I love to see that she interested in tennis or sports. Absolutely. You know, his mom always enjoyed tennis. That’s it. I hope he’ll still be saying the same thing in a few years.”

That year George attended his first-ever trip to Wimbledon and looked happier than ever as he watched the pros play the men’s final on the final day of the tournament as he sat happily alongside his parents William and Kate.
