“Kim will be surprised if North has more agency and is older. She’s had meltdowns around paparazzi since she was a baby, but Kim still refuses to take the steps to protect her.”
The 9-year-old, who sat front row at Jean Paul Gaultier’s Fall/Winter runway show with her mother and Anna Wintour, showed off the handwritten message as cameramen snapped non-stop photos of her.
A clip of the now-viral moment was quickly shared by Kim herself, who lightheartedly noted that North “had it with the people who took pictures of her.”
“Anyone who knows North knows how funny she thinks this video is! North probably had it with the people taking pictures of her so she wrote STOP on her invite and held it up wanting them to just focus on the show,” Kim wrote.
But despite her nonchalant response, Kim’s tweet was largely met with criticism from fans, as several people questioned why the reality star was taking her daughter’s discomfort lightly.
“If you know she doesn’t like the pics then why are you putting her in the FRONT ROW???” one person wrote.
“If your daughter doesn’t want to be photographed, don’t take her to front row seats at a fashion show,” reiterated another.
It wasn’t long before the conversation about North’s uneasiness escalated even further, with several users noting that days before the “STOP” sign moment, the 9-year-old had actually confronted the paps themselves to ask why she was them and her family always film.
North and boyfriend Ryan Romulus, daughter of Kim’s best friend Tracy Romulus, faced a crush on daddies in Paris as they walked ahead of Kim and Cici Bussey, the Kardashians’ cousin.
“Why do you have to wait for us all the time?” North asked the photographers, who continued to take tons of photos, as one yelled back, “Because you guys are so famous. We love you, North!”
Not only did fans label the paparazzi’s comments as “creepy” and “hilarious,” several users questioned why Kim North walked in front of the group when she was so obviously uncomfortable.
And Kim’s apparent willingness to put North “in the spotlight” is something fans continued to debate, as the mogul shared the video of the 9-year-old hand-writing “STOP” sign.
“It’s not appropriate for grown men to tell little girls that they’re following her because they love her. She clearly hates being photographed by them and that she can’t get away from them – we know the Karjenners know how to get away if they want to, so… protect your daughter,” one user wrote.
But unfortunately, as several Twitter users pointed out, North’s recent viral moment is just the latest example of her venting her uneasiness about the paparazzi, as the young child actually has quite a long history of calling her.
First, and perhaps most memorable, North was filmed yelling “No pics!” at a couple of photographers in 2015 when she was just 2 years old.
The paps had been waiting outside North’s ballet class to take several photos of her. “I said no pictures,” the little girl said loudly, which ironically was answered by the men immediately asking each other, “Did you get that?”
And what really bothered fans was the fact that neither Kim nor Kanye were present at the time, and North was only accompanied by a nanny.
“She’s not a celebrity. Her parents signed up for this life, but she didn’t. Leave the little girl alone!!” one person commented below a clip of the exchange. “Something is really messed up with a bunch of grown men hanging out outside a children’s ballet school to photograph a two-year-old,” wrote another.
The following year, Kim posted a video to Instagram in which she appeared to be asking North – who appeared to be hiding under a giant fur coat – why she didn’t want to be photographed or included.
“Why won’t you,” Kim asked before being interrupted by North, who said, “No! No pictures.” “Why?” Kim asked again while continuing to film the little girl.
And North’s attitude toward her family’s spotlight-focused lifestyle was also featured on an episode of Keeping up with the Kardashians which aired about three years later.
After being swarmed by paparazzi during a trip to New York, a very confused North asked her mother, “Why do so many people take pictures of us every day?”
In response, Kim attempted to explain the reasons for her family’s notoriety when she told the little girl, “Well, to get very technical — my name is Kim Kardashian. And daddy is Kanye West. And dad is a singer. Artist. Artist. And Mommy has so many talents I can’t even name them.”
In fact, the Skims founder eventually revealed that she and her older sister, Kourtney Kardashian, had had conversations with their kids about their family’s unique lifestyle and offbeat fame.
“Kourtney and I sat down with our kids and had little conversations with them, and as they get older we’re going to continue to have those conversations and just explain it to them,” Kim said during an interview Jimmy Kimmel Live! in 2019.
Interestingly, two of Kourtney’s children, Mason and Reign Disick, have also expressed a degree of unease about their inevitable stardom in recent years.
Just a few months ago, Reign – who is 7 – was filmed telling the paps to “give us a break” as he and his family tried to make their way through the swarms of photographers gathered around Kourtney’s wedding came to Portofino, Italy. Meanwhile, 12-year-old Mason has almost completely retired from the public eye, rarely appearing on his family’s social media pages.
Given that the KarJenner kids have faced a ridiculously high level of publicity since birth, it’s perhaps unsurprising that some of them seem to be fed up with the constant attention.
Because of this, several users have expressed concern about North’s exposure to the public just recently. In fact, many fans have compared how various other celebrities tend to shield their children from the limelight when they’re showing signs of discomfort.
“I remember Sarah Michelle Gellar immediately stopped paparazzi from photographing her and her children when one of them showed discomfort. That’s what parents do when they have their child’s best interests at heart,” one person wrote, referencing the actor’s well-known stance against photographing children.
Sarah, who has two children, has previously opened up about her dislike of the paparazzi and concerns for her children’s safety. “If everyone sticks together, we can make a difference. My poor daughter doesn’t take a family picture because she’s afraid of cameras because every time she goes to ballet or school someone puts a camera in her face. It’s terrifying,” she said.
Another Twitter user pointed out that Beyonce’s children – 10-year-old Blue Ivy and 5-year-old twins Sir and Rumi – are rarely seen by the public. In fact, Blue Ivy had retreated so far from the spotlight that fans were completely shocked to see how much she’d grown when photos of her on her birthday surfaced earlier this year.
“[Let’s] Be honest a lot of celebs have kids you hardly see pictures of like Beyoncé’s twins are rarely captured and I know they leave home but their parents find ways to protect them,” they wrote.
Other users noted that Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard, and Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher are just two examples of celebrity couples who are vehemently opposed to photographing and posting their children.
“I don’t think there is a single picture of any of these children’s faces. Maybe one or two,” one person wrote of their respective children.
In 2017, Ashton was famous prompted the media not to circulate pictures of his and Mila’s two children, tweeting: “I continue to kindly request you: Please do not post/publish photos of our children. You have not chosen public life.”
Meanwhile, Kristen once confronted Dad and asked her to delete all photos taken of her and Dax’s two daughters. “Do you realize how much you are endangering my children by photographing them at their school?” she asked the photographer.
And with several other celebrities proving it’s possible to keep their kids safe from the public eye when the need arises, many fans have wondered why the KarJenners — namely Kim — aren’t quite on board just yet, especially given North’s long-running shows of discomfort.
