What do you do when you learn you have a different genetic markup in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? They email Kevin Feige in all caps — or at least Iman Vellani did.
During Episode 6 of Marvel Studios Mrs Miracle Summing up all the main stories of the series (Kamala Khan and her family reconcile, Kamran strikes a new path, DODC realizes they can’t fight a bunch of kids, etc.), there’s a big revelation waiting just around the corner. Knowing that his sister can use the Noor energy, Aamir Khan asks Bruno Carrelli if he might have powers too? So Bruno runs some tests on Aamir, only to find out that Kamala is an outlier in her family for a different reason – there’s something else with her DNA.
Bruno isn’t exactly sure what’s going on with Kamala’s genetics, so he offers this simple explanation and claims that it is “something else in your genes.” Not knowing the weight, Kamala shrugs: “Whatever it is, it’s going to be just another label.”
are you freaking out If the answer is yes, then you’re in good company, as does the cast and crew of Mrs Miracle are also freaking out over this huge reveal (and yes, you heard that music cue right).
“Oh my god, the best day of my life!” Head writer Bisha K. Ali tells Marvel.com when asked if he can be included this word.
However, this was not always the plan. The creative team wanted it to feel organic and not forced, and Ali continues, “It wasn’t like that to begin with [of the show]. There’s always something in motion at Marvel, and we’re trying to resolve that question: ‘If anything [Kamala’s family] Put the bracelet on, would they have powers?’ The answer was always no, from a character point of view no.” So do Kamala right from the start different from the rest of the Khans made sense.
When the opportunity came up to actually give Kamala this backstory to explain why she could harness the bracelet’s power while others couldn’t, it just “fitted into the logic of the broader MCU”.
And when Vellani found out this was happening? Then she emailed Feige in all caps.
“They sent me, and only me, the draft [of the final episode], and I freaked out right away,” Vellani recalls. “I emailed Kevin Feige in all caps. I thought are you really doing this? Are you sure? I feel so honored! I was like yelling at him over email. i freaked out This is the biggest deal in the world and the fact that it’s happening on our show is insane.”
Kamala’s DNA was the biggest secret behind the scenes, and few knew what would happen at the end of the episode. Matt Lintz, who actually breaks the news to Kamala in the episode, eventually had to be privy to the secret — but it took some time.
“They didn’t even have it in there [the script],” he explains. “I remember having a conversation about it and [the directors] were like, ‘Yeah, you say that crazy thing.’ They didn’t even want to tell me what it was! I thought, ‘What’s going on here?’ They have been very secretive about the whole thing.”
Vellani also knows that the reaction to this revelation will be through the roof. “People will lose their minds. You will lose everything. I did. It’s really a really big deal.”
When it came time to actually film the scene, it was a challenge, but not for the obvious reasons. Vellani and Lintz just giggled every time the cameras rolled because they knew the weight of the word.
“It took a long time to film that scene because every time Matt said that word, I would giggle,” explains Vellani. “I think we have the one take. The one you see in the episode is one of two we got where I was slightly serious. It was really, really, really difficult. I think we have as many outtakes of me as I’m breaking down right now because I was so excited and giddy about it.
“Iman couldn’t get over one shot because… she was glowing, like she was out of character,” adds Yasmeen Fletcher, who plays Nakia and is just out of earshot in the scene. “They had to cut and re-film that so many times.”
“Iman laughed,” Lintz continues, laughing herself. “She laughed almost every second. It was hilarious because she just said, ‘This is so cool.’ She couldn’t believe I told her that. Obviously it’s so big for her character. We walked through the scene and she kept laughing. It made me laugh.”
Elsewhere on the set, the entire crew freaked out and giggled too. Lintz recalls, “I remember…you could only hear it in the background [the crew] everyone was screaming and the excitement and joy they had was really, really funny. It’s a very big moment. I was just blessed and lucky to be able to share that with Iman and everyone else.”
Vellani still can’t believe she’s even allowed to say the word out loud now. “It makes me so excited, I can’t even put it into words. I feel very, very honored, very, very lucky.”
Ali shares the same sentiment, knowing her teenage self would be beside herself if she knew what was happening now.
“I’m so excited as a viewer of my show. The Bisha teenage fangirl in me says, ‘I can’t believe it.’” recalls the author. “And the fact that it’s Kamala — that’s it she. It’s like her wildest dream has already come true during the show [gaining powers], but then we just gave her a little more of the dream. It’s incredible. I’m so happy.”
What happens next? No one knows, but everyone is excited for what’s to come.
“So many have been waiting for this,” adds Lintz. “So many people were happy about it. It’s even cool for me and Iman as a viewer because we don’t know what’s going to happen. [This is] something the fans, myself included, are so excited about.”
