In June, over 2,000 performers from across the province competed in an annual music competition hosted by the Ontario Music Festivals Association. This is the third year that the provincial festival is being held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.

A total of 48 Kingston artists attended the 2022 Provincial Festival, a significant increase from last year’s 37 participants.

“Registrations have increased as artists from Curriculum Levels 1 to 5 have been added to the provincial festival. Before 2020, only senior levels from 6 to adult were accepted. That means younger attendees at our local Kingston Festival had the opportunity to be recommended for Provincials,” said Cherrilyn Yalin, a member of the Kingston Kiwanis Music Festival Planning Committee.

The participants of the festival ranged in age from six years to adults. Judges from local festivals, including Kingston, recommended their best performers to compete in the provincials in 13 different musical disciplines including vocal, piano, strings, guitar, musical theater and instrumental.

According to Yalin, the contestants recorded their performances and uploaded them to YouTube, where a panel of respected provincial judges reviewed their entries and selected the top placings for each class. All performers received written assessments commenting on their technical ability and musical interpretation of their pieces.

When Kingstonist inquired about the likelihood of future festivals being held in person, Roly Tinline, vice president of the Kiwanis Festivals Board of Directors, said, “We hope to host a live festival in 2023, but the experience of the virtual festivals in 2021 and 2022 will prove valuable in many ways as we go along.”

Local singer Emma McNeil placed first in the province in Open Classical Voice and received a $1,000 scholarship.
