Is that Maz Kanata in the Andor trailer?!

A new Disney+ trailer of Andor features an alien character almost identical to Maz Kanata from the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Is it really her?

Confirms the trailer footage that Maz Kanata will be in it Andor? A forerunner to Villain One (itself a prequel of war of stars) plays Andor in the years leading up to the victory at the Battle of Yavin, accompanying Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor on his early missions for the Rebel Alliance. Dubbed a “spy thriller”. Andor will build on the events of A new hopeand feature familiar faces K-2S0, Mon Mothma and Saw Gerrera. Andor‘s placement in the war of stars The timeline has precious little relevance to Disney’s sequel trilogy, but the official trailer footage has sparked discussion about a possible Maz Kanata appearance.

Maz, played by Lupita Nyong’o, debuted in 2015 Star Wars: The Force Awakens before making itself felt in both Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. An ally of the Resistance, Maz ran a Mos Eisley-style criminal haven from her castle on Takodana, speaking mostly in annoyingly vague riddles. Her character’s underdevelopment is one of the most common criticisms of Disney’s war of stars trilogy, and the story of Maz Kanata undeniably has room for expansion through future projects.

Around the 2:10 mark Andor‘s official Disney+ trailer, a character who looks suspiciously like Maz Kanata can be seen performing a surgical procedure on a sleeping patient. The character has orange skin, white hair, a thin frame, ear covers, and round, bug-like eyes. Since the trailer shot is both fleeting and dark, it’s easy to mistake the surgeon for Maz Kanata, but upon closer inspection, it’s not Maz Kanata. That Andor Character appears to be male, and her facial features (when paused and lightened) bear little resemblance to Lupita Nyong’o’s recent CGI character from the war of stars sequels. It is possible that the unidentified alien belongs to Maz’s species (whose name remains unknown), but a larger angle reveals four arms, neither of which looks particularly orange. Perhaps this surgeon is a hybrid of several different species (with Maz as the head), or perhaps the resemblance is purely coincidental.

Could Maz Kanata appear in Andor? Where is she during his timeline?

Not Maz Kanata in the Andor trailer

Maz Kanata might not be the alien with a syringe in Disney+ Andor Trailer, but the charming pirate queen could still star alongside Diego Luna. Although she may not look like it, Maz is centuries old Star Wars: The Force Awakensis therefore alive and active during Andor‘s timeline. war of stars still hasn’t said much about Maz Kanata’s movements immediately before/during the original trilogy, but implies that after Order 66 Maz went into hiding due to her Jedi connections and disappeared from the Empire’s radar. That Star Wars: Commander The video game confirms that she hired bounty hunters to retaliate when the Imperials closed in, and accordingly Star Wars: Forces of Destiny‘s “Bounty Hunter” episode, Maz was already friends with Han Solo (Chewbacca even more so). Return of the Jediand helps Princess Leia sneak into Jabba’s palace on a rescue mission.

Given the aura of secrecy that still surrounds Maz Kanata’s past and her apparent tendency to side with the rebels whenever she needs to, it’s entirely possible that Cassian Andor will run into Maz during his solo series and hers seeks (probably reluctant) help on a secret mission. But while the schedule and motivations may fit, Maz Kanata’s presence is in Andor doesn’t seem particularly likely. Drafting an actress of Lupita Nyong’o’s stature for an unannounced cameo seems unwise if Maz doesn’t lack the huge influence of Princess Leia, Darth Vader, or even Grand Moff Tarkin. And while Andor likely render a CGI Maz without Nyong’o’s involvement, such a decision would itself draw criticism. Viewers will have to be content with the four-armed doppelganger.
