fire and Ice was a 1983 animated fantasy film directed by Ralph Bakschi and a collaboration between Bakshi and Frank Frazettabased on characters co-created by Bakshi and Frazetta from a screenplay written by conan comic writers Gerry Conway and RoyThomas, and made using rotoscope film. And now Dynamite Entertainment is set to release a new comic book series based on the film, as well as a tabletop game.

As the upcoming year 2023 marks 40 years since the original film was released in 1983, now more than ever is the time to celebrate and continue the legacy of this innovative and memorable film. Dynamite is partnering with the Frazetta family and Bakshi Productions with talented creators to create a truly special set of sequels that will delight fans new and old.

“When I was in elementary school, my grandfather introduced me to his film ‘Fire and Ice,'” said Sara Frazetta. “Watching movies together, especially Fire and Ice, has cemented our relationship. We felt the intensity of the scenes together. We were placed in the world he created. It was magical. Fire and Ice has always been one of my all-time favorite movies. To be able to bring the Bakshi family and Dynamite back to life is incredibly exciting!”

“Bakshi Productions is excited to be collaborating with the Frazetta Girls and Dynamite Comics to develop new Fire & Ice media,” shared Eddie Bakshi. “It’s my honor to re-explore the fantastical world created by Frank Frazetta and Ralph Bakshi. I know Bakshi fans have been waiting for more Fire & Ice material for a long time and we want to give them that.”

Nick Barrucci, CEO and publisher of Dymamite added, “Fire and Ice is a groundbreaking animated classic, loved by fans and creators alike. In conversations with Sara Frazetta and after addressing my love of film, she said that we could have had further conversations with Joe Weber, Sara Frazetta and Eddie Bakshi to see if we could work on some creative direction, with which everyone would be happy to expand the series. It was important to all of us that we bring in something new and grow the fantastic tapestry that came before. Thankfully we all agreed on the direction of the series and bringing fans the backstory of these incredible characters that will build on the film. So when the opportunity arose to release a game based on the film, that was just the icing on the cake. I speak for myself and the team at Dynamite when I say that we are honored to work with the Frazetta family who are comic book kings and the legacy of the Bakshi family. We can’t wait for fans and retailers to see the series once it releases.”

A comic book series is planned to serve as a prequel and continue the themes and ideas of the original film. That ended with the barbarian hero Larn and his beloved Princess Teegra embracing their victory and survival against the fearsome evil Queen Juliana and her insane son Nekron. While her mysterious one-time ally Darkwolf watched from afar. Could fans see these characters again, or be introduced to a barbaric and fantastical cast of newcomers? These secrets will be revealed in good time when the projects are realized.

More information on the creative team will be announced shortly, but the comic series will feature a cover showcasing Frank Frazetta’s original masterpiece painting created for development and an eventual poster for the film. Superstar artists with a love of myth will be announced shortly before the entry date.

In addition to an exciting comic book prequel, Fire and Ice will also be coming to players’ tabletops! The sprawling fantasy mythos and unforgettable characters translate perfectly into the RPG realm, where these tropes will be loved by players who play Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder and more, with many games adapted from Fire and Ice and Bakshi’s other fantasy films are inspired. The exact format and design of the game is yet to be announced.
