Dave Chappelle has fun onstage with Snoop Dogg at the Blue Note Jazz Festival in Napa… after facing controversy for hosting the event

Dave Chappelle was spotted having a great time at the Blue Note Jazz Festival in Napa, California on Friday night.

The 48-year-old comedian, who also hosted the festival, was joined by his wife Elaine Arte during the event, and he notably joined Snoop Dogg while the rapper performed for his fans.

The performer’s participation in the event was met with controversy, as several activists had previously expressed concern about his previous material mocking transgender people.

Chappelle kept his look casual during his time at the festival with a t-shirt and cargo pants.

Elaine opted for a Balenciaga crew-neck sweater as she watched her husband perform.

It was previously announced that the star of Chappelle’s Show would headline the festival last April.

The three-day event features a star-studded lineup including Chaka Khan, Erykah Badu and Flying Lotus with frequent collaborator Thundercat, among others.

However, the decision to hire Chappelle to host the festival was viewed by some as offensive given his past anti-transgender jokes.

TransLife rep Jennifer Rihl issued a statement to SFGate expressing her disapproval of his selection.

“Using comedy against us only encourages transphobia, so I don’t find that funny,” she said.

She also stressed that transgender people had been “constantly discriminated against” in the past.

Rihl said, “I think the trans community is a pretty sensitive group, but with good reason.”

TransLife co-founder Orlando O’Shea also commented that comedy in general has previously been a safe space for marginalized individuals.

He stated, “Comedy was one of the last acceptable landscapes where discrimination is allowed… where do we draw the lines and what are the consequences of our jokes?”

According to the media outlet, Bay Area News reached out to festival organizers for comment on the decision to hire Chappelle to host, to which they received no response.

The comedian’s appearance at the event came just a week after his show at the First Avenue venue in Minneapolis was canceled at the last minute.

The venue subsequently apologized to its staff and guests for booking the actor, whose performance was canceled just hours before it began.

Chappelle’s show was immediately moved to the Varsity Theater, where he made several jokes about the current situation.

He labeled monkeypox a “gay disease,” according to the Star Tribune, and called the event’s protesters “transgender maniacs.”
