Much like Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker earlier this year, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez tied the knot at an Elvis wedding in Vegas on July 19. The couple had only been engaged since April, but apparently they wanted to be husband and wife sooner rather than later. Bennifer fans are excited about the news, and they’re not the only ones. Even Affleck’s famous ex-girlfriend, Gwyneth Paltrow, had some thoughts about the JLo nuptials.
In terms of the timeline, Ben and Gwyn were the “it” element before Ben and Jen. They dated from 1997 to 2000 after meeting on the set of Shakespeare in love, the romantic drama that earned Gwyneth Paltrow her first and only Oscar win. Ben Affleck then started dating Jennifer Lopez, which was her first time, followed closely by her first engagement, which eventually fell apart. Apparently, they’ve managed to say yes now — almost 20 years later — and Paltrow apparently just thinks it’s so “romantic.” The infamous Goop founder reacted to the wedding on her Instagram Stories, as seen here:
Romantic indeed. Some might even say it was a long time coming… Kind of like Gwyneth Paltrow’s return to acting would be a long time coming considering the actress hasn’t had a movie role since Avengers: Endgame in 2019. However, Paltrow claims to have happily retired from showbiz while she focuses on her wellness brand. As for the former Batman actor’s other ex, his former wife Jennifer Garner, she was spotted weeks before the nuptials with JLo’s kids, but it seems like she wasn’t told much about the Vegas nuptials, according to some reports.
Instead of a big celebrity task, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez opted to quietly wed at the Little White Wedding Chapel. However, things did not remain quiet for long. The couple, who stood in line alongside the stars to receive their marriage certificates, opened up about the brief encounter with the A-listers. The eventual wedding ceremony was relatively modest, according to JLo’s account in her newsletter. Still, it was special for her to include a wedding dress that the bride had borrowed from an old movie. (Internet detectives are still searching for the film in their extensive film catalog that contained the dress in question, so far without success.)
And again, very similar to how Kourtney and Travis Barker did things, the former Gigli Stars are reportedly following their escape with a bigger and flashier second wedding in a special location. (Hint: It won’t be in the Bronx, but it does have some history.) Which is good, because according to reports, only a few of the couple’s five children from previous relationships were in Las Vegas present, so everyone is likely to join the next one.
Meanwhile, JLo has opted to take her new husband’s last name, just as she promised during her first whirlwind engagement all those years ago. However, I’m wondering will we start to see a change in billing and credits for the actress’ upcoming films as a result of the change? Whatever the case, the recent frenzy in marital activity is sure to give new meaning to the title of her next film – The romcom forced marriage with Josh Duhamel (streaming soon for Amazon Prime subscribers).
2022 is apparently just the year of celebrity weddings. But if you’re wondering if Gwyneth Paltrow will also be following in Ben and Jen’s footsteps — given her recent statements about how she and her other ex-boyfriend Brad Pitt still love each other — think again. Paltrow is herself remarried to writer-director Brad Falchuk, and based on another post on their Instagram Stories, they appear to be just as happy as Bennifer.
