Ana de Armas says the attention for her high-profile romance with Ben Affleck has been “terrible.”
That Deep water Co-stars made their romance official after wrapping their film in March 2020 — and then the COVID pandemic hit. When they hooked up during lockdown in Los Angeles, they were followed everywhere as they walked their dogs, picked up their coffee deliveries, wore matching heart necklaces and played in the garden with his three children. In a new interview with ellde Armas – who reportedly broke up with Affleck over the phone in January 2021 – said she felt trapped in this fishbowl existence and it led to her moving out of LA
“Terrible” is the word de Armas uses to describe the attention their relationship has been following closely while most people were at home looking for a break from the 24/7 pandemic horror stories. For real? the interviewer clarified. “Yes this is good. It’s one of the reasons I left LA.”
The Cuban actress, 34, explained, “The walkthrough confirmed my thoughts, ‘This is not the place for me.’ It got a little too much. There is no escape. There’s no way out.” She said LA has always made her “feel like there’s something you don’t have, something’s missing. It’s a city that scares you.”
Calling the period “weird,” she also shared that her father was ill (with a non-COVID illness) back home in Cuba, but she was unable to visit him due to pandemic travel restrictions to the island. “At the same time, I worked a lot and felt very happy.”
When the couple split and Affleck unceremoniously dropped the cardboard cutout he had from the James Bond actress, it was reported that she broke off their “complicated” relationship and one factor was that they “don’t live in Los Angeles.” wanted and Ben obviously has to since his children [with Jennifer Garner] live in Los Angeles.”
Deep water, in which they played husband and wife, debuted on Hulu in March — over a year after they split. At this point, Affleck was back together with Jennifer Lopez, to whom he is re-engaged. De Armas has been dating Tinder executive Paul Boukadakis since at least December.
Today, de Armas lives in NYC with Boukadakis. The couple met through a mutual friend during the pandemic. Their first dates were at each other’s homes, talking and drinking wine, and didn’t make headlines — as did their first dates with Affleck.
“I deleted Twitter years ago,” she said of her post-LA life, and “barely been on Instagram,” where she once shared life photos with Affleck. She swore she doesn’t have any secret social media accounts — or else keeps anything a secret. Due to her busy work schedule, she hardly knows anyone in NYC. Ahead plays Marilyn Monroe in it Blond and plays a CIA agent The gray man Also with Chris Evans, Ryan Gosling and Rege-Jean Page.
In her free time, she meets FaceTimes friends around the world (including Spain, where she lived for eight years after leaving Cuba and before coming to Hollywood) and hangs out with her dogs, Elvis and Salsa. The face of Estée Lauder will be taking a summer vacation to Italy, presumably with boukadakis, and “enjoying all the limoncello and tiramisus I can get my hands on.”
She makes it very clear that in her life after Affleck and LA, she’s happier than ever. To illustrate her point, she shared a story about turning 34 — on the set of spooky – on 04/30
“It was on the beach and [there was] a fire pit, and we worked until almost 1 a.m.,” she said. “At the end I said, ‘Okay. It’s my birthday so I need a fireball.” I had everyone with me: my husband, my dogs, Chris [Evans] and the crew. I wasn’t at home for a romantic dinner; I was on set with my guys doing what I love, on the beach and having a shot of Fireball. So that was my 34th birthday. And it’s the happiest thing I’ve ever been.”
