LOS ANGELES (AP) – ‘Succession’ earned a top 25 Emmy nominations Tuesday, but the satirical drama about the rich and ruthless has a groundbreaking rival in ‘Squid Game,’ the first non-English language series to compete for the Emmy’s top honor television competes.

“Squid Game,” a drama set in South Korea in which the poor are fodder for violent games, received a Best Drama nomination and 13 other entries for September’s Emmy Awards. “Succession” won the Best Drama trophy and eight other awards when it last contended for the Emmys in 2020.

“Ted Lasso” was the nominee for top comedy series with 20 applications and has a chance to win his second-best comedy trophy in a row as Academy voters remain undeterred by his turn to the emotional dark side in season two showed.

Other tip nominees including the tropical resort-set anthology-dramedy The White Lotus, which also received 20 nominations; the comedies Hacks and Only Murders in the Building, each with 17 commandments; and the teen drama Euphoria. Her star Zendaya, who was crowned Best Actress in 2020, was nominated again.

Ending series that might have expected salutes have instead been snubbed, including popular family drama This Is Us, which received an offer for original music and lyrics. An equally popular family comedy, Black-ish, received costume and hairstyling nominations. “Ozark,” which ended its run last season, fared better with 13 nods, including best drama series.

The final season of “Insecure” earned its creator star Issa Rae a comedy lead offer, while the return of “Atlanta” earned its creator and lead actor Donald Glover a shot at a Best Actor trophy to win his 2017 award to secure.

The critically acclaimed Abbott Elementary made a smashing debut in its first year and received seven nominations, including a best comedy nomination and a lead offer for its creator Quinta Brunson. Recognition for the ABC show was a rare bright spot for broadcasters otherwise locked out of comedy-drama series races.

The other nominees for Best Comedy Series are “Barry”; “Catch Your Enthusiasm”; “hacks”; “The Wonderful Mrs. Maisel”; “Only Murders in the Building”; “Ted Lasso” and “What We Do in the Shadows”.

Best Drama Series nominees include “Better Call Saul”; “Euphoria”; “Severance pay”; Stranger Things and Yellowjackets.

The blockbuster modern vampire comedy What We Do in the Shadows and Yellowjackets, a combination thriller and coming-of-age saga, demonstrated that Emmy voters have both a sense of humor and adventure. The controversy apparently left her unfazed: “Dave Chappelle: The Closer,” which was criticized for its transgender taunting, received a pre-taped variety show special nomination.

“Only Murders in the Building,” a light-hearted crime-thriller playground directed by the charmingly unlikely trio of Selena Gomez, Steve Martin, and Martin Short, received offers for best comedy actor for its veteran stars, but left Gomez off the list.

Netflix’s global sensation Squid Game follows in the footsteps of 2020 Oscar-winning Parasite, also made in South Korea. But “Pachinko,” a rousing and critically acclaimed South Korean family drama, failed to garner an Emmy nod.

Emmy rules allow a non-English language show to compete with a US producing partner, but it took the rise of streaming services to make that possible. The Emmys were once dominated by broadcast and later cable shows produced primarily for North America, but streamers are targeting that market and a host of others — noting that shows produced in Asia, Europe and elsewhere are broadcasting worldwide can become.

“Squid Game” boosted rare Asian representation with five acting nominations, including a leading actor offer for Lee Jung-jaek and a supporting actress for Jung Ho-yeon. The show had already proved groundbreaking at this year’s Screen Actors Guild, where Lee and Jung received the guild’s first acting trophies for a non-English language show.

The longstanding lack of shows with dialogue other than English is demonstrated by NBC’s 1980 miniseries ShÅ gun, based on James Clavell’s novel about early 17th-century Japan. The US studio’s bilingual production was a pioneer but not a trendsetter when it won the Emmy for Best Limited Series and Best Actor Honors.

The other nominees for Best Actress in Comedy Series are Rachel Brosnahan, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel; Kaley Cuoco, “The Flight Attendant”; Elle Fanning, “The Big One”; Issa Rae, “Insecure” and Jean Smart, “Hacks.”

Miscellaneous nominees for Actors in a Comedy Series include: Bill Hader, “Barry”; Nicholas Holt, “The Great”; Jason Sudeikis, “Ted Lasso”; Steve Martin, “Only Murders in the Building”; Martin Short, “Only Murders in the Building”.

That nominees for drama series actors are: Jason Bateman, “Ozark”; Brian Cox, “Succession”; Lee Jung-jae, “Squid Game”; Bob Odenkirk, “You Better Call Saul”; Adam Scott, “Severance” and Jeremy Strong, “Succession.”

The best actress of the drama series nominees are: Jodie Comer, “Killing Eve”; Laura Linney, “Ozark”; Melanie Lynskey, “Yellowjackets”; Sandra Oh, “Killing Eve”; Reese Witherspoon, “The Morning Show” and Zendaya, “Euphoria”.

The limited series nominees are: “Intoxicated”; “The Dropout”; “invent Anna”; “The White Lotus”; “Pam and Tommy.”

That nominees for variety talk series are: “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah”; “Jimmy Kimmel Live”; “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver”; Late Night with Seth Meyers and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Television Academy President Frank Scherma prefaced the announcement of the nomination by saying that a record number of shows had been submitted, reflecting series production was at an all-time high after being drastically reduced during the pandemic.

The Emmy ceremony is scheduled for September 12 and will air on NBC, with the host yet to be announced.
